About this brown noise clip

This is a 70-second Short: a sample of the brown noise we use for tinnitus masking, with a little pink noise mixed in so the top end feels slightly brighter. Brown noise carries most of its energy in the low frequencies, so it sounds like a deep, steady rumble rather than a hiss. Many people with tinnitus find a sound like this easier to live with than silence, especially at night.

Sound masking does not remove tinnitus or repair hearing. A steady background sound makes the ringing stand out less, so it takes up less of your attention.

How to use it

  • Use this short clip to check whether the sound feels comfortable to you.
  • For sleep or a long work session, pick a full-length brown noise video: a 70-second loop is too short for that.
  • Set the volume a little below your tinnitus, so you can still hear the ringing blended into the noise. Sound therapy usually aims for this point rather than drowning the ringing out.
  • At night, a speaker on the bedside table is usually more comfortable than earbuds.

When to see a professional

If your tinnitus is new, affects only one ear, pulses with your heartbeat, or comes with hearing loss or dizziness, see a doctor or an audiologist.
