Where this sound comes from
This 41-second Short is a real recording of the Petrohué Waterfalls (Saltos del Petrohué), in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park in southern Chile, where the Petrohué River runs over volcanic rock below the Osorno volcano. There is no synthetic noise in it: just falling water.
A strong waterfall spreads its sound across a wide range of frequencies, much like white noise, but with small natural changes that many people find easier to listen to than a steady electronic hiss.
Waterfall sound and tinnitus
Because it has plenty of high-frequency energy, waterfall sound can blend well with high-pitched ringing. Like any masking sound, it makes tinnitus less noticeable while it plays; it does not cure it.
- Start at a low volume, at or just below the level of your tinnitus.
- If it feels too bright after a while, try pink or brown noise, which are deeper.
- For sleep, choose a full-length video and play it on a speaker rather than earbuds.
When to see a professional
If your tinnitus starts suddenly, affects one ear, pulses with your heartbeat or comes with hearing loss or dizziness, see a doctor or an audiologist.
